Claudia Williams was one of the women of Greenham Common. She produced a series of sketches of her time at the female colony of protestors and this monumental composition was her largest and most ambitious work from that time. Claudia Williams was at Greenham in 1984; the camp was established in 1981 by a small group of female activists who began a walk from Cardiff to Greenham called Women for life on Earth. Greenham became a highly organised and successful form of protest and brought a new degree of determined, principled action, without violence or weapons, to Britain. Claudia here captures an aspect of the camp which surprised many observers. There was a sense of peace and harmony which overlaid the protest and demonstrations. Her peace vigil shows the camp with mothers and children locked together in a dance of hope and mutual respect.
