Harriet Harding was born in 1813, the daughter of James and Mary Harding who lived in Farnham in West Street. Harriet died a spinster in 1880. In the painting she is facing slightly to the left and sitting down. She is wearing a dark orange-red off-the-shoulder dress with large puff sleeves and a small gold brooch in the centre of the neck. White lace just shows around the neckline. Her hair is in ringlets down to her shoulders. She is wearing a crucifix on a long black cord around her neck, which she is touching with her left hand. There is a small ring on the middle finger of her left hand. The background is dark with a dark green curtain on the left. The artist, Thomas Hunter senior, ran a boys' school opposite Willmer House (now the Museum of Farnham).
