Henry and Frances Read were the eldest son and daughter of John Read of Walthamstow. Henry was born in 1767 and later took the name of Revell. Frances married Colonel Peters, Equerry to the Duke of York. The artist, John Opie, was the first Cornish painter of any distinction. He was primarily a portrait painter, although he also painted large historical subjects, as well as religious and poetical subjects. He was the son of a St Agnes carpenter whose portrait he painted when aged only 11. On leaving school, he was apprenticed first to his father and then to the local saw-pit. While he was there, he was discovered by Dr Wolcott, a Truro physician who was also a satirical poet writing under the name of Peter Pindar and an amateur artist who had been a pupil under Richard Wilson.
