This painting forms part of the original decoration of the Grand Staircase at St Bartholomew's Hospital. It depicts a circular medallion with a male head, inscribed 'Hippocrates', and ornamental swags on either side. The ornamentation on the Grand Staircase is attributed to 'Mr Richards' by J. Nichols and G. Steevens in 'The Genuine Works of William Hogarth' (London, 1810).
