Holbrook Gaskell was born on 10th January 1771 in Warrington. The son of Roger Gaskell (1738–1803) and Esther Woodcock (1738–1782) he was baptised on 4th February 1771 at Sankey Street Chapel. On 21st July 1809 he married his cousin Ann Gaskell (1774–1849) at the Parish Church of St Elphin. The couple lived at Prospect Hill, a large country house to the south of Warrington where they were often visited by other members of the extended Gaskell family, including Ann’s nephew William Gaskell (1805–1884) and his wife, the author Elizabeth Gaskell (1810–1865). Holbrook and Ann had no children and upon his death Prospect Hill was bequeathed to his nephew, the industrialist and art and plant collector Holbrook Gaskell (1813–1909).
