Southampton artist Vera Stokes completed this triptych while she was a student at the Southampton Institute. She said: "My fellow students and I were preparing work to take to our Degree Selection Boards and it was against a background that some of us would be winners and some losers that my work evolved." Since that time she says she has spent many happy hours at Salisbury Racecourse sketching and photographing horses and riders. This work is painted in vibrant colours and was based on visits to the racecourse in Sussex, which is also situated in very beautiful countryside. The artist tried to convey the fact that people from all walks of life go racing, and how enjoyable it is to spend a day in the fresh air participating in the excitement which racing can bring.
