Bought privately by A. H. Smith (later Warden of New College). Whilst a member of the kitchen staff (1928–1940), the encouragement given by Fellows of New College enabled D. Pittuck to attend the Ruskin School of Drawing in his spare time. Albert Rutherston, in charge of the Ruskin at the time, was also an Honorary Fellow of New College. Warden H. A. L. Fisher, interested by Pittuck's work, gave further encouragement and introduced him to William Nicholson who was painting the Warden's portrait. Warden A. H. Smith continued the interest in the artist's work by lending him books on art and occasionally buying some paintings.
