Lawrence Gowing, CBE, held one of his rare one-man exhibitions in London in June 1955 and from this we were fortunate in acquiring the painting 'Ilse Magdalen R.', an example of contemporary traditional painting at its very best. It has great strength and breadth of treatment, and a subtle use of colour and appreciation of tonal values which produce an effect of almost sculptural serenity. The artist shows an awareness of many contemporary strains of aesthetic theory without conveying the slightest suggestion of mere polite derivation. It is remarkable that such qualities should emanate from a background of professional university teaching. Professor Gowing is a most rare combination: a creative artist and a learned and perceptive critic and art historian.
