Not only were the Barrett-Lennard family royalists, but their high rank in society throughout the centuries allowed them to be surrounded by eminent figures at court and aristocratic circles. One of the Barrett-Lennard family members, Thomas Lennard (1654–1715), 15th Lord Dacre, married Lady Anne Fitzroy (or Palmer) (1661–1722), later Countess of Sussex, in 1673 at Hampton Court. Lady Anne served as Lady of the Bedchamber to James II’s queen, Mary of Modena, in exile. More importantly, Lady Anne had blood connections with Charles II. Her mother, Barbara Villiers (1641–1709), Duchess of Cleveland, had been one of Charles II’s favourite mistresses with whom the king had spent the night of his coronation and parented Lady Anne in February 1661.
De Troy, as any court painter, had an important role to visually represent the king in a manner that would establish his authority as the king of England. This was previously achieved also by Anthony van Dyck, Charles I’s court painter, and Sir Peter Lely, Charles II’s.
