A landscape of a mountain range overlooking a lake. In the foreground, on the near bank, is a group of several figures preparing to cross the lake. In the centre of the picture is a man on a black horse; he is either pointing at or hailing some figures on the ferry that is carrying cattle to the opposite bank. In front of the horseman, is a small dog at the water's edge barking at a fisherman whose rowing boat is moored to a stake on the bank. By the horseman's side is a brown horse, (saddled but not mounted). Behind the horses, a groom or keeper with a rifle holds his grey horse by the bridle. On the extreme left of the picture are several figures, including a woman on horseback and some men loading a small sailing boat. In the immediate foreground on the left is a groom dressed in a long blue coat and a bowler-type hat, who is tending to three brown and white dogs. On the extreme right edge of the picture, perched high on an outcrop of rock, is Dolbadarn Castle, its tower covered in creepers. The painting is signed in the bottom left corner: 'G. Barret 1777', the 'G.' and 'B.' forming a monogram.
