This mural charts London's skyline during a summer's day. The dome of St Paul's Cathedral, as well as the roads radiating from the South Bank to seven bridges crossing the Thames are depicted. Richmond wrote, 'we are all inescapably linked with the past and future', and the painting tries to show this. On the left, dawn breaks over the Imperial War Museum (the past) and on the right dusk falls over the Millennium Dome (the future). To paint the view, every morning Richmond would arrive at the University and climb a vertical ladder to the rooftop with his easel, paints, brushes and turpentine strapped to his back, and a bottle of drinking water but no food. He would stay up there all day painting. When unveiled in 1999 Frank Auerbach said the painting was, 'a brave and ambitious enterprise', and art historian Richard Cork called it a 'millennial tour de force'.
