Major General Andrew Gilbert Wauchope was a member of the family of Wauchope of Niddrie. He served for several years in the navy before being commissioned into The Black Watch in 1865. He took part in the Ashanti Campaign and later in the Egyptian and Sudan Campaigns of the 1880s. Wauchope became Commanding Officer of the 2nd Battalion in 1894, after which he was posted to the Sudan as Brigadier General. Promoted to Major General in 1898, he died leading his men during a dawn attack at the Battle of Magersfontein on 11th December 1899. A soldier’s soldier, nicknamed 'Red Mick' by his men, he was an immensely popular officer and his death was felt keenly in Scotland.
