This painting shows a medical officer treating a wounded soldier on the battlefield. The use of the Red Cross emblem on an armband ensures that those assisting the wounded can be easily identified and protected in conflict situations. The artist exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a member of The Royal Watercolour Society. He became a book illustrator and one of the highest paid and respected of all British poster artists.
