In this oil painting, former National Coal Board painter Eric Hill has chosen to paint three separate underground scenes together in one picture. The painting appears to take you from the coalface to the surface. A miner operating a coal-cutting machine is pictured alongside a row of men who are at the end of their shift. In the third scene your eye is drawn through the tunnel to the light marking the entrance to the drift mouth.
