This is one of a series of 39 paintings produced by Stephen Chaplin based upon his memories of his childhood during the Second World War in Orpington. The painting depicts an event when Stephen Chaplin's father, so moved by the rhetoric in a speech by Winston Churchill relayed on the radio, that he raised his hands and cut his own eyeball with his left thumbnail. His eye recovered, but he was later very ill with pneumonia.
