The pillar is thought to have been raised as a memorial to the Legh family following the demolition of the original Norbury Booths Hall in 1745. Another theory suggests it was constructed from stones from the old church, commemorating the building of the new Booth Hall in the same year.
A third of the way up the column is a peephole through which Booth Hall and the nearby Toft Hall can both be seen, suggesting it could have marked an agreement or boundary between the families.
