Lord Ashdown first entered politics as First Secretary to the UK Mission (Foreign Office) to the UN in Geneva in 1971 where he remained until 1976. Ashdown was leader of the Social and Liberal Democrats, 1988–1989. and the Liberal Democrats. 1988–1999. In 2001 Ashdown was created Baron Ashdown of Norton-Sub-Hamdon, in the County of Somerset and from 2002–2006 was the High Representative of the International Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
