Pauline Perry, Baroness Perry of Southwark, was appointed Director of South Bank Polytechnic in 1986. In 1992 she and Dr Anne Wright became the first women in history to run British universities when the Polytechnic became South Bank University. On being questioned whether, as a woman, she was capable of the role, Lady Perry said 'Just because she is small and female doesn't mean she isn't tough'. Educated at Wolverhampton Girls' High School and Girton College, Cambridge, Perry has worked tirelessly as an educationalist. In 1991 she was awarded the Freedom of the City of London and also became a life peer. In her role as Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of South Bank University she presided over the institution's centenary celebrations in 1992.
