Nathan Fielding was born in Sowerby near Halifax in Yorkshire. Early on in his career he developed a good reputation for painting portraits. Once he was established, Fielding was commissioned to paint a number of town views. The artist probably spent a significant amount of his time in this area when he was travelling between his home in London and his clients in Yorkshire.

The painting shows the view of the Georgian market place towards the Cathedral. The dark silhouette of the Guildhall and the pink clouds add drama to this painting. The house in the centre of the painting with the red and white façade was owned by Earl Fitzwilliam.
