The doubt over the identity of the sitter is his costume, which is dated to before Richard’s birth. The portrait is therefore probably of another Richard Tyson (1680–1750), son of Edward Tyson, who was also a fellow of the RCP and physician at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, but educated at Cambridge University.
