The artist was the daughter of the goldsmith Joseph Vallayer and was brought up at the Gobelins manufactory where her father worked. She was principally a still life painter but also sometimes painted portraits, genre subjects and miniatures. In 1770 she was accepted as a full member to the Académie. She was the only woman to be accepted at this time without either being the wife or daughter of an academician and without official support from the royal family. She was the leading female artist exhibiting at the Salon until the advent in 1783 of Vigée-Lebrun and Labille-Guiard. She attracted influential patrons, including Mme Pompadour’s brother, the Marquis de Marginy, who was in effect Minister of the Arts to Louis XV.
