This portrait of a young gentleman was previously attributed to the French portraitist Nicolas Largillière, but the correct identity of the artist was revealed in 1983 when cleaning uncovered Arnold Boonen's signature. Boonen's technical accomplishment is particularly evident in the rendering of textiles, such as the gentleman's silver brocade waistcoat. Boonen spent a period in Germany, where he was very successful as a painter of portraits. When he returned to his native Holland in 1696 he settled in Amsterdam, where his skills as a portraitist were sought by visiting foreigners as well as local citizens.
