Professor Sir Ian Gilmore (b.1947) is a consultant physician at the Royal Liverpool University Hospitals, specialising in diseases of the liver and digestive tract. He was made honorary professor at the University of Liverpool in 1999, and was president of the Royal College of Physicians between 2006 and 2010. In 2001 Gilmore chaired a working party at the RCP that produced a report, ‘Alcohol – can the NHS afford it?’, which set out a coherent strategy for tackling the social and health problems associated with alcohol. Gilmore still chairs the Alcohol Committee as well as the Alcohol Health Alliance and the European Alcohol and Health Forum Science Group. In August 2010, Gilmore controversially announced that ‘making drugs such as heroin and cocaine legal would "drastically" cut crime and addicts’ health problems’.
