This was displayed (together with its pair, ‘Melancholy Madness’) on the entrance portico of Bethlem Hospital from 1676 to 1815, during which time it was a significant London landmark. These two figures demonstrate the difference between raving and melancholy madness which was how mental ill health was characterised at the time. Twisted and desperate, ‘Raving Madness’ is restrained in hospital chains in furious agony. Today we would call this psychosis. Bethlem was one of the world's oldest hospitals treating mental illness. This statue was probably placed at the entrance to urge passers-by to donate to the hospital.
