The scene depicts Kinloch Glen on the Isle of Rum, with the Kinloch River in flood as it races towards the island's only sea loch, Loch Scresort. Mullach Mor rises 304 metres to the right. Looking directly west, a nearby track leads to the centre of the island with forks to the former townships of Kilmory and Harris, where the Bullough Mausoleum is located. George Gordon Byron Cooper was born in Manchester in 1850. As a student he studied at Manchester Academy of Fine Art, developing a passion for landscapes and the action of light. Cooper is considered the ‘father figure’ of the Manchester School of Painters. Selected to represent British art in both oil and watercolour at international exhibitions, including the 1889 Paris Exhibition, his work came to the attention of Sir George Bullough who invited Cooper to paint a series of views around his island of Rum to hang in his new residence, Kinloch Castle, which was nearing completion.
