A landscape scene depicting the ruin of an old stone cottage in Tomen y Mur, North Wales. The ruin, reduced to a pile of stones, lies against a desolate landscape. This painting is Neo-Romantic in its expressive response to the dilapidation of the stone structure, as well as in its interest in the ruin as direct subject matter. Many critics have compared John Piper's work with that of the eighteenth and nineteenth century Romantics in its interest in representing the expressive potential of the land.
