A characteristic peasant interior by the artist. A man crouches, grinning and gesturing lewdly behind a pregnant girl who clutches a flagon to her chest. A warning of the consequences of over-indulgence, the earthy behaviour of the laughing couple is contrasted with the spiritual demeanour of the young boy with a book, a model who reappears in a number of paintings by the artist. Through the window, a view of Rotterdam is just discernible. The picture was thought to be by Arie de Voys when purchased by the dealer Paillet for the 3rd Marquess of Hertford at the Van Leyden sale in Paris.
