The son of a successful businessman, Mann spent several years studying in Paris, first at the Académie Julian from 1877 and then with the fashionable portrait-painter Carolus-Duran whose other pupils about this time included Sargent. In 1886 Mann was invited to become a founder member – and the first Scots member – of the New English Art Club. He married in 1887 and in 1890 took his family to Tangier for nearly two years for the sake of their health. North Africa was to inspire some of Mann’s most impressive and painterly sketches.
