The sculptures were created as part of a new housing development to mark the site of a former school. Wilson wanted to express the loss of all the noise, energy, and laughter of the school – this led to the idea of abandoned school bags and the school bell (time being rung). Frogs symbolised transformation but were also based on a story told by a relative of schoolboys bringing frogs in pockets and releasing them in class.
