William Bradley Lamond was born in Newtyre, near Dundee. He was not formally trained and spent many years working the Caledonian Railway. Lamond initially focused on portraiture but later concentrated on landscape and coastal scenes. His work can be noted for its strong impressionistic style and use of colour. He became a member of the Royal Society of British Art in 1906 and exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art.

This seascape is very impressionistic in style. It displays many key elements of the impressionist movement such as strong visible brush strokes that create a very vibrant surface. This, when combined with the colour and tone creates a very fresh and vibrant scene with great movement and texture.
