This work from Roy Slade’s early years in Wales represents the beginnings of a lifetime of exploration of the possibilities of abstraction in the visual arts. Slade attended Cardiff College of Art from 1949 to 1954, before two years National Service in the army. He then taught in schools and colleges in Nottingham and Leeds, before moving to the USA. In 1968 he was Visiting Professor at Corcoran School of Art, Washington DC. He returned in 1969, first as Associate Dean and then as Dean of the School, with its prestigious gallery. Following a dispute between officials at the public opening of an exhibition in 1972, Slade was appointed replacement director of the Corcoran Art Gallery. In 1977 he moved to Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, to become President and Director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum until his retirement in 1995.
