This painting is a self portrait of Matthew Ellis Nutter who was born in Carlisle and attended classes held by Robert Carlyle where he learnt architectural drawing and landscape painting. In 1819 he received his first commission and later became secretary of Carlisle Academy and one of its drawing masters. He exhibited regularly at Carlisle Academy and Carlisle Athenaeum. He remained in Carlisle throughout most of his life and many of his works are a historical record of the city and its environs. A series of seventeen of these historical views (1833) were lithographed and published by Charles Thurnam in 1835 as 'Carlisle in the Olden Time'. As his health declined he turned increasingly to nature and several of his last works were landscapes painted on the Solway coast.
