Sir Edward Letchworth (1833–1917) was the Grand Secretary, or Chief Executive, of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1892 until his death, making him the longest serving Grand Secretary to date. During this time he took part in the foundation ceremonies of over 400 lodges. Letchworth was a solicitor and, in addition to his Freemasonry, he was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA) and a Governor of St Bartholomew’s Hospital. This portrait was commissioned posthumously by the United Grand Lodge of England and is one of a series of portraits of past grand secretaries. In it Sir Edward Letchworth is holding the collar worn by the Grand Secretary, whose emblem is a pair of crossed quills.
