Sir Norman Moore (1847–1922) was born near Manchester and educated at Cambridge University. He completed his clinical studies at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, to which he remained connected for life. In 1918 he published his 'History of St Bartholomew’s Hospital', which had taken 30 years to write in his spare time. Moore held many positions at the Royal College of Physicians, London, including president between 1918 and 1922. In 1919 he was made a baronet. Moore was a successful physician, pathologist and teacher, but also a very learned man, and he contributed 468 lives to the 'Dictionary of National Biography'. The portrait was painted by Reginald Grenville Eves, and is a replica or variant of the portrait exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1913.
