Sir Robert Peel was a statesman, leader of the Tory Party, and Prime Minister from 1834 to 1835, again in 1839, and from 1841 to 1846. His last administration one of the greatest of the period but Peel resigned after splitting his party with his decision to repeal the Corn Laws. He was a dominant political figure of the 1840s.
