This tiny jewel-like painting is the Victoria Art Gallery's most significant recent acquisition. It also tells an extraordinary story.

It was painted in Munich by the Swiss artist, Paul Klee. When German hyper-inflation forced its first owner to sell up, it was acquired by a German-Jewish family, the Habers. They fled Germany and, as it was so small, took the picture with them. It was the son of the family, Lutz Haber, who eventually ended up in Bath. He treasured the painting his whole life, and bequeathed it to the Gallery.
