This painting of St Peters Parish Church, Onchan was donated by the Friends of Onchan Heritage, who also had the painting restored in 1997. It was painted in 1895. The signature is not clear, but reads as being 'Humberland'. Although the painting style is naïve, the scene is relatively unchanged, and instantly recognisable by the local community. The painting is permanently displayed in the library, near the local history section, as it captures a piece of Manx heritage. The view depicted in the painting will always be associated with an era of local seafaring heritage, which gained worldwide interest. The current church was built in 1833, just 50 yards from the old church, which had fallen into disrepair. William Bligh was married there on 4th February 1781, at the age of 26.
The leader of the mutiny, Fletcher Christian, also had Manx connections, as did a young midshipman – Peter Heywood. Peter Heywood was spared execution following a strong defence, and there are Heywood family graves in Onchan Churchyard. Lewis Buckle Reeves, one of the last surviving officers from Nelson’s 'Victory' is also buried there.
