Dr Carne practised in West London. He is shown half-length, seated, in Presidential robes and chain of office with the College buildings at Prince’s Gate in the background. The insertion of the College buildings is an allusion to his role in the acquisition of 15 Prince's Gate in 1976. It was largely through his financial flare as Treasurer that sufficient money was available for the purchase.

In 1959 he became Honorary Medical Officer to Queen’s Park Rangers Football Club. A post he held for 30 years until retiring in 1989 when he was made Vice President. He was made President of WONCA in 1976.
