'The Annunciation' illustrates the moment in St. Luke’s Gospel (I, 38) when the Archangel Gabriel tells Mary that the Holy Spirit, symbolised by the descending dove, will cause her to bear the Son of God. Mary’s abandoned work-basket and the prie-dieu in the background refer to apocryphal accounts that she was sewing, praying or reading the Bible. A favourite theme of the artist, this version was painted for the parish church of Sainte Catherine in the Marais, Paris. The striking austerity of the work may reflect the Jansenist sympathies of the painter.
