In Roman mythology, Flora is the goddess of flowers and the season of spring and fertility. The Leicester family at Tabley owed much of their wealth to the land, so the statue of Flora in the Portico Room is a symbol of renewal and thanks for their prosperity. Flora was married to Favonius, the wind god – maybe this is why the south entrance to the house is so windy!

The figure is a copy after the second-century marble in the Capitoline Museum, Rome which may, itself, be a copy of a Greek original.

Perhaps this statue was inspiration for the 3rd Baron de Tabley in writing 'The Flora of Cheshire' in 1899 and pursuing his lifelong interest in this subject.
