This painting depicts the death of Major General James Wolfe, who commanded the 20th Regiment of Foot from 1750 to 1758. In 1759 Wolfe was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British forces that conquered Quebec. This painting depicts Wolfe's heroic death at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759.
