Subleyras was an important French painter, mainly of religious subjects, who worked mainly in Italy. This representation of the embarkation of St Paula for the Holy Land could be related to Subleyras's commissions from the Order of Gerolamini for the Church of St Cosmas and St Damian in Milan. If this was the case, this sketch is likely to have been executed in the period 1738–1739, which would be consistent in terms of style and execution. The textured effect created by short brushstrokes is a common characteristic of Subleyras's work. Saint Paula (347–404) was an early Roman saint. We learn of Paula's early life through the writings of Saint Jerome, with whom she is closely associated. In his Letter 108, he states that she had led a luxurious life and held a great status.
