This painting is thought to be a late work by Beucklaer. Usually, this artist’s pictures contain several meanings, with a covert reference to a biblical theme at their hearts. This painting does not reveal a biblical reference but is loaded with narrative. On one hand, for example, the stall in the foreground can be seen as a realistic representation of a Flemish fishmarket. The three main figures are depicted buying and selling fish, with the negotiation and chat which would accompany such a transaction. The painter has exploited this scene to show off his ability in depicting a variety of fish. Outside of the boundaries of the fish stall, however, the artist has introduced other, more mysterious narratives. Two women in veils are drawn aside in deep conversation on the left hand of the composition.
