Three-quarter-length portrait of the sitter wearing a brown coat, white cravat and green silk waistcoat. He sits at a table holding a letter in his right hand with an open book nearby. Through a window in the background there is a glimpse of a classical building. Although of considerable charm this painting can be seen to be the work of an amateur artist if it is compared with the portrait of Trotter by David Martin executed during the same period.
