'The Image Finder' was exhibited at the Royal Academy in plaster in 1897, and in bronze in 1899. This version is signed and dated 1897. Paris-born William Robert Colton studied at Lambeth School of Art, at South Kensington, and at the Royal Academy Schools. He was elected an Associate in 1903 and full Academician in 1919. He was Professor of Sculpture in the Royal Academy (1907–1910 and 1911–1912). Two works by him in Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery were purchased under the terms of the Chantrey Bequest: 'The Girdle' (1899) and 'The Springtide of Life' (1903).
