The composition derives from Sienese sixteenth-century roundels made by Domenico Beccafumi and his circle. The elderly female saint could be either St Anne, mother of the Virgin, or St Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist. The choice of colour and handling of paint, together with the painting's condition, suggest a far later date for this painting, perhaps of the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century.
