Thomas Lett was a wealthy timber merchant, High Sheriff of Surrey and skilled trustee of many of the Walcot Foundation charities and charity schools. This bust was carved by Francis Chantrey, one of the leading neoclassical sculptors of his day who specialised in head-and-shoulder figures.

plinth front: TO THE MEMORY / OF THOMAS LETT ESQRE / OF THIS PARISH AND ST PETER'S, ISLE OF THANET / WHO MARRIED FIRST / SUSANNA RANDALL SUTER / WHO DIED 20TH JUNE 1815 LEAVING ISSUE / TWO SONS AND FIVE DAUGHTERS / AND SECONDLY ELIZABETH HANNAH BOAK / BY WHOM HE HAD ISSUE / THREE SONS AND ONE DAUGHTER. / HE WAS FOR MANY YEARS AN ACTIVE MAGISTRATE OF THIS COUNTY. / HE FILLED IN THE YEAR 1817 / THE OFFICE OF HIGH SHERRIF FOR SURREY / AND DIED 25TH AUGUST 1880 IN THE 61ST YEAR OF HIS AGE. / THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED BY HIS FAMILY IN TESTIMONY / OF THEIR RESPECT AND AFFECTION.
