The cross was removed from Congleton High Street in 1772. It was restored and re-erected for the coronation of Edward VII in 1902. The cross seems to have existed in various forms. Mr Pedley replaced the original cross which he had knocked down in 1730 with one which is described as having been 'quite plain'. The stones of the old cross were then taken to Buglawton and laid at the Town Meeting House at Key Green, where they remained neglected and forgotten. At the time of the accession of Edward VII, the remains of the cross were recovered from Buglawton and erected in the Lawton Street gardens. It was then transported to the park where it stands in a much more favourable setting.
