It was intended to erect a 50 foot (15.2 metre) bronze memorial in London to commemorate Franco-British co-operation in the First World War. The winged Spirit of Progress is depicted emerging from the battlefield, showing the feminine Humanity the fair land of goodwill. An edition of 20 maquette bronzes, of which this is No. 7, were cast to raise funds for the British League of Help Fund, to be sold for 100 guineas each. The full-sized statue was never erected.
