Gwen John was a painter who seemed to be happy indoors. She was born in Pembrokeshire and brought up with her more flamboyant brother Augustus. However, Gwen never settled in Wales and found France much more to her taste. This simple canvas may well have been the fruit of studies of flowers undertaken in her sitting room. It is painted in her characteristically dry painting style, with an almost bare canvas and an impasto brush. The quality of the colour is quite beautiful, as the artist delicately manipulates a very limited palette in a careful pattern of pink and green. Gwen had high ambitions for her art, all of which were achieved, but her relative isolation from the British art establishment meant that she never enjoyed the adulation which came after her death.
